Teaching with Twitter and Social Media

Monday, November 27, 2017

I use Twitter and other social media platforms when teaching in the classroom, adult courses, and even for my TransformEd workshop offerings.

During my graduate studies at York University, I was fortunate to take a course about digital technology with Professor Ron Owston.

Join our Kindergarten Additional Qualification Course - York University

Saturday, January 7, 2017

Today I am blogging about my work as a Kindergarten Additional Qualification instructor for York University.  Within this post you will find information about my upcoming #yorkukaq course offering from January 31st - April 13th, 2017, as well as inspiration from the Fall term that just ended...

#yorkukaq combined 1-2-3 course in exactly a week!

Tuesday, September 20, 2016

In one week exactly I will begin instructing the York University Kindergarten combined course, and I simply cannot wait.

You should all know that there has been a small update that might make a huge difference in some of your learning!!!  Since I have been approached by several educators about when I will be instructing part 2, we have decided to add it.

I have successfully instructed a fully combined course (for teachers and DECE's) that is supportive to all learning interests and needs.  Please know that I will work hard to differentiate your learning experience!

The reason for this change, is that with my new family life I cannot look too far into the future and commit to the next session.  I therefore, felt badly to have participants wait a whole year!!!

Our numbers are fairly high, which means that most likely Trista Dutt (@kindiekorner) will be co-facilitating with me again!  I believe we have about five spaces left and the registration closes on Friday.  If, however, you are interested and see this over the week-end - send me an email! We have had students join us on the day class begins! Hopefully we can make it all work!

Some details to help with your decision:
  • We begin Tuesday, September 27th in person
  • Location - Guardian of the Angels Catholic Elementary School (Weston and Major Mackenzie - 400 exit on Maj. Mack)
  • Thursday night will be to help participants connect online using Twitter
  • The following week and remainder of the course we will only meet Tuesdays online (specific time is chosen with your PLC group for a one hour chat) (readings are done at a flexible time throughout the week before your chat) and Thursdays in person from 5:00-8:30 p.m.
  • If you have a curriculum night or school event Thursday, please don't worry!  That
will take priority.  If you need to miss more than one evening there will be a make-up assignment for the hours lost.
  • Assignments are practical, manageable, and flexible.  There will be many options to choose from whether you are in a classroom or not!
  • We have inspiring guest speakers and school visits as field trips.
  • This course is for teachers and DECE's.
  • You will only get credit for the part that you are registered for (e.g., Part 1).
  • Together we will be navigating through the new Kindergarten Program document (2016)
  • More info. and descriptions can be located on my first blog post announcement (here) or the York university faculty of education website

Here are some (there are many!) of my favourite former kindergarten AQ session memories/moments:

You can find many more at #yorkukaq through Twitter and Instagram.

See you in a week!

Back to School Learning Opportunities and FAQ's

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Are you starting to feel organized and ready for this new year? These are some of my favourite back to school supplies!

I hope that you have had a nice start to the school year and enjoyed International Dot Day with your students!

Over the last few weeks, I have had several emails asking about upcoming events.

Me on International Dot Day 2014!

Here are some of the FAQ's:

Will I be instructing the Kindergarten AQ this year?

In the past, I had offered the York University Kindergarten AQ Course course throughout the school year and summer months.  With my PhD courses in full-swing and an upcoming wedding to plan this December, I am taking a bit of a break.  I hope to offer them again in the Winter and Spring months, but it would all depend on my course load and whether or not my new school permit will give us permission to host it in the library (where I will be working).

If, and when, this is finalized, I will add it to the "Events" page as well as the #yorkukaq page.

What is CTInquiry and can I join?

CTInquiry is a network that I started last September to bring educators together from across the province of Ontario.  CTI stands for "Connected through inquiry: A curious community of learners."  The hope is to have like-minded professionals share their inquiry learning journeys (successes, challenges, pedagogical documentation, etc.) and inspire each others' next steps.

We will be meeting at different locations (classrooms, outdoor learning areas, restaurants, cafes, libraries, etc.) once every other month from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  The month when we are not able to gather together, I will offer a Twitter Chat online from 9:00-10:00 p.m. with the hashtag #CTInquiry.

All new members are welcome! Also, please do not feel the pressure to attend all of the scheduled sessions! You can just drop in without emailing me, by checking the #CTInquiry page on the blog for the date and location.

Our first session will be held tomorrow (Wednesday, September 17th, 2014) at Moraine Hills Public School in Richmond Hill.  For the complete address and details click here!

When and where will the TransformEd Workshops take place that I had blogged about?

While I was on the boat from Mykonos to Paros this summer, I had an idea to begin to offer some workshops on some of the questions that I am often asked by educators (e.g., planning for inquiry, photography for pedagogical documentation, portfolios, etc.).  I want these sessions to be supportive and within a special learning environment.  My hope is to offer "Brunch and Learn" workshops on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

When I find the right environment, I will add the workshops to my Events page, as well as post the flyer onto the blog.  Stay tuned!!!

All blog pages can be accessed at the very top of the blog!
